Champier-Clarke – Landscape Gardener & Design Cheltenham
Herbaceous border design and Planting. New instant hedge, turf and driveway
Champier-Clarke used their extensive knowledge of plants to create these herbaceous borders to complement an arts and crafts house in the Cotswolds. Each bed was over eighteen metres long and nearly four metres wide with two borders on each side of the lawn. The overall master plan was undertaken by Portus and Whitten from Cirencester, however all planting design, detailing, material specification and construction was carried out by Champier-Clarke Ltd. A new 150 foot driveway was installed as well as 1,500 metres square of turf and several mature trees and instant hedging.
New terrace with cretan terracotta pots soft planting and topiary
The new terrace utilised intricate topiary to fit in with the arts and crafts style of the house. The pots used on this project were hand made cretan pots by pots and pithoi, they are planted with Viburnum tinus ‘eve price’. Planting was simple concentrating on texture and movement.
Cotswold garden, the construction process
Here is a collection of photos from the two jobs shown above. The garden needed lengthening by five metres to realise the design, this was achieved by removing and replacing the driveway as well as removing over 2500 tonnes of spoil. The material dug out was lost on site filling a dip in a paddock.
The white garden
Planting Can be challenging but when you only have one flower colour, clever design solutions must be overcome. Our planting designer Robert Champier-Clarke enjoyed this project where only white flowers could be used. Concentrating on bark colour, texture and form, Robert created a garden with no less than four different sun exposure levels.
Wild flower meadow
This wildflower meadow was completed completely from scratch, spraying off old vegetation and adding establishing wild flowers that are local, beneficial for insects and wildlife and attractive. Meandering paths lead you through the meadow which is gaining new wild flowers every year including orchids.
In the past many gardeners had previously tried to establish an orchard in this area with no success. Champier-Clarke created large planting pits to overcome the stony ground and have had great success with mainly local varieties of fruit.
